The following la the cable from the chairman of the Eastern Fx onsion On ra . pany to Sir J. Vogel-“ October 27—1 have your telegram that your Gi varmnent have declined arbitration, not wi hstsn 1 - ing their having obtained tha sancbo-i <>f Parliament for the extension cf the sa - sidy for 5 years. The Gorr.p'my have no alternative bnt to raise tariff for intercolonial telegrams passing over N<w Zealand cab e to ten shillings p-r ten words from the Ist N- vember in order to recoup the loss of r he subsidy. I stated the whole care before tlu sh*reho ders at the half-yearly meeting o- lav. They unanimously approved of tie decision to rai-;e tha t-rff.” At a meet'ng of the Cabinet to day tha question whs considered and the Government las decid’d to impose a terminal charge on inward messages of four shillings for ten words and fivepecce for every additinal word. It is txp-cted thit th s charge will cover the increase on the messages, fir Julius Vogel says : —“ We shall collect the samt am unt as at present and trnst to the increase of rates on Inward messages which the Company will have to collect and ba accountable to ns for, to recoup the additional amount for which we shall h ave to be accountable to the Company. The following ia the cablegram sent by Sir J. Vogel to the chairman of the Eastern Extecalon Telegraph Company—October 30.—1 n reply to your telegram, when you were offered trrms authorised by Parliament you refused to accept them. I now protest against the increase of rates without notice from the International, -> Office. Meanwhile I give you notice if you raisa the rates on Monday that we will require a terminal charge of four shillings for 10 words and fivepence each word additional on all inward intercolonial messages.
