THE RIVERS.

The Ashburton river was in heavy flood yesteriay. Some damage has, we hear, been caused to one of the plantations, a number of young trees being destroyed. A NARROW ESCAPE. Heavy rain sot in along the hills on Wednesday evening about 5 p m, which caused the Hinds river to overflow its sonth bank. At 4 p.tn. yesterday it was quite impassable and in flood. About noon yesterday Mr Breen was crossing with a load of wood, and being overtaken by tho flood, wia in imminent danger of losing his life, as were also the horses Bis shouts attracted the attention of a lad named Morris, who, with commendable promptitude, brought assstance. Messrs Schaffer, Morris, and EVorrish junr,, were soon upon the tho spot and strenuous efforts were made tc rescue Mr Breen and the horses from thoir perilous position. Phis they ncceded in doing, but not before the horses and dray were carried three ot four chains down the stream. Mr S. B, Nelson, of Ashburton, and Mr S. C. Farr, of Christchurch, had a narrow escape yesterday while attempting tocrojs the Hinds in a buggy. They had to cutthehorses outofthe vehicle leaving it in the river, and make their way to shore. The two gentlemen made their way to Mr 0. J. Harper’s homestead, where they were given a change of clothing and hospitably received
