LOCAL AND GENERAL.
An Order in Council published in the “ Gazette ” apportions tho representation on tho Boards of the contributory local bodies under tho Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act, 1885, Amendment Act, 1880. By it the Ashburton County and Borough aro entitled to return two members to the Board for the Ashburton and North Canterbury district.
A meeting of tho Committee of the Ashburton Baeing Club was held at the Club’s room on Saturday evening. Present—Messrs C, W. Purnell (Chairman), W- B. Denshire, 11. Friedlandor, and 11. Zander. A letter was read from the Dunedin Jockey Club regretting that the dates of its Spring Meeting had clashed with those fixed by the Ashburton Club. Its dates were an annual fixture, and it bad overlooked tho Ashburton Meeting. It trusted the explanation would bo received in the light it had been sent. A letter was read from Mr Hammond with reference to the horse Rocket and the Flying Handicap. It was resolved that the letter be acknowledged, and that the Secretary be instructed to point out to Mr Hammond that the Stewards having considered all points in connection with tho Rocket claim, and their decision being final, tho Committee does not see its way clear to re-open the question and declines to enter upon further correspondence in tho matter. Mr Denshire submitted the Grounds Committee’s report, which stated certain works were being done to tho course and grounds. It recommended that certain buildings should be painted, and that Messrs Roberta and Mason’s offer of totalisator for throe years should be accepted, provided they erect suitable buildings and approaches. The report was agreed to, the suggestions with regard to painting and totalisator being adopted. The question of grand stand was loft with tho Committee to report at next meeting. It was decided that a general meeting should bo held on November 20, and the Committee adjourned.
At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr D. Williamson, J.P. a first offender for drunkenness was fined 5s without costs. T, Langan, charged with stealing 501bs of coal, was remanded till tomorrow.
Mr Ballanco (says tho Aurl-lnml Ilrrald) still continues to earn golden opinions for the manner in which ho is pushing on (he settlement of tho waste lands of the Crown. It is a pleasure to see the Crown Lands Office and the Survey Office thronged with working men examining the maps and making enquiries as to the position and character of the blocks available. Tho recent Crown lands sale was very successful, the competition keen, and the great bulk of the land passed into the hands of men who will utilise it for themselves and families rather than for speculative purposes.
Sir Thomas and Lady Brassey contemplate visiting (he Australasian colonies, starting from Ifoine about December. Gold bricks are to be used as the foundation for a throne to be built at San-hai tor the Chinese Emperor. New discoveries of caves of unexampled splendor have been made in a mine located in Orange Range, about 10 miles north of El Faso, US. Waling Taylor is said to be cook in the Hokitika Gaol, the responsible duties of which he fulfils well. 110 is said to be stout and hearty.
American moneyocracy is startled by the unexpected marriage of the son of Jay Gould, the millionaire, forty times repeated, to a Miss Ediih Kingdou, a member of Daly’s company of players, All claims having been satisfied on tho patriotic fund which was raised in New South Wales when tho Soudan contingent was despatched, it is now proposed to give back to those who subscribed 85 per cent of their money.
The opening of the boating season at Christchurch on Saturday afternoon was one of tho most successful aquatic gatherings ever held there. Fifty-six boats formed the procession. Tiro attendance was fully as large as at any previous opening. The weather was fine.
A 1010 , rapine chess match between Otago and Canterbury, ten players aside, began on Saturday night. Otago is captained by Mr Hay, atrd Canterbury by Mr Hookham. No game has been decided, but at one board Mr Aclon-Adams, of Canterbury, has a slight advantage over Mr Christie, of Dunedin. Mary O'Neill, wife of Benjamin O’Neill, a farmer at Doyleston, was killed on Saturday evening near Sookburn, by being thrown out of a trap through the horse shy-lug.
A country paper tells the story of a gentlewoman of that city, who last summer attended a funeral in a local church. After the singing of a hymn, tho man who was sitting beside her remarked, “ Beautiful hymn, isn’t itma’am ? Tho corpse wrote it.”

The work in the Domain, on which the un employed have been engaged for some weeks past, is now drawing to a completion. The islands in the stretch of water have been lovcdled, the rank growth of vegetation removed, and the sides have been banked up. The dam is almost completed, and the watercourse above it has been widened and altered very materially. There will bo a fine stretch of water for canoeing and boating. An island has been formed at the termination of Winter si reel. Water will be again turned on in the course of a few days, when wo think it will be found that a really beautiful transformation has taken place in the Domain. The very greatest credit is due to Mr C. E. Books, under whose plans and supervision the work has boon carried out.

Wo undersland that a movement is on foot to induce the Government, if possible, to acquire a suitable area of a land for a village settlement in the vicinity of Ashburton. A memorial to tho Hon Mr Ballance, Minister for Lands, is in preparation and will be signed by a number of ho mi fide intending settlers, who, we understand, suggest that part of the area belonging to Mr I. It. 0. C. Graham, and now under offer for sale, would be suitable for the purpose in view. |
