The steeplechaser B-rrlngton, brought here on Monday by the Hon. R. Rodney, of Christchurch, died suddenly. He Intended riding it to to the Lakes. Mr W. At a meeting of gas consumers, a committee was appointed to receive complaints as to the quality and price of gas and meter rates.
Intelligence has been received from Rotorua that the lake is higher that pre viously known and it is still rising. Considerable damage will be done.
Blenheim, October 22. The Marlborough Volunteer forces were inspected to-day by Sir George Whitmore. There were 107 of all ranks on parade. The Marlborough Hussars who have been under canvas for six day's drill, break up camp to-morrow, and military sports will be held in the afternoon. Dunedin October 22. At the annual meeting of the Drapery importing Company the balance-sheet showed the business bad largely expanded. A. dividend of 8i per cent., and a bonus of per cent, were declared, leaving £771 to be carried forward. The large wholesale businesses of Sargood Son and Ewen, and Ross and Glendinning have been amalgamated. This includes the Roslyn Woollen Mills, and all the branches throughout the colony. Wellington, October 22. The Hon. Mr Ballance has received a report from Mr G. A. Schock, who was engaged by the Government to start the silk cultivation industry in the Auckland district. The writer says that the mulberry trees, 1000 In nnmber, wnich the Minister instructed him to distribute to those persona who intended to rear silkworms are thriving well, and he has little doubt that with care an important industry will soon be in full swing. Mr Schools mentions that he la now engaged on a manual about silkworms, having completed the manuscript | of another manual on the cultivation of the mulberry.
