NEW ZEALAND WOOLLEN GOODS.
A letter in the Dunedin Stxr states, on the authority of the Geelong Advertiser, 'hat a traveller from a New Zsaiand firm recently took orders to Gaelong for £3OOO worth of woollen goods, notwithstanding that there are several iarge woollen factories in that place and that the woollen Industry is protected by a heavy duty. The Argus reproduced lha particulars as follows:—'• There is a gentleman just now in Geelong who represents a New Zisland woollen mill. He was tt a place of public retort last night, an I where it was stated on the faith of a telegram from one of the members for Geelong, that the Government proposed 20 per cent, advance on woollens. Taken literally, that Now Zealand gentleman seemed considerably taken aback, and volunteered the statement that he had that day taken £3OOO worth of orders, contingent on the duty not being increased to men than 26 per cent. At any beyond that, his engagements were tff We make a present of the incident to Messrs Gillies and Deskin ” In the same letter it is stated that there are nine woollen factories in New South Wale*.
