Melbourne, October 15

The papers in reference to the question of colonial defences, including Admiral Tryon’s scheme, have been presented to Parliament. They show the Admiral proposed that war vessels should be manned by the Admiralty, and that the colonies should bear the cost of maintenance, which is estimated at yearly. Mr Gillies proposed a scheme involving a cost of 000. The New Zealand Government considered their position exceptional, and pioposed to make an annual payment of direct to the Imperial Government. The Argus, in an article on the defence question, expressed the belief that a binding arrangement between the colonies would be a great advantage to them.
