THE IMPERIAL INSTITUTE
[REUTER'S TELEGRAMS—COPYRIGHT ]
Melbourne, October 8. It is announced the New Zealand Government has signified its willingness to contribute towards the fund which is being raised for the establishment of an Imperial Institute, and it is expected that the Australian colonies generally will increase the amount of their conbutions towards the funds. London, October 7.
The Conrt of the Common Council of London has postponed discussion of the question of the establishment of an Imperial Institute until they shall have received further information as to the amount likely to be raised for the purpose. London, October 8. At a meeting of the Committee appointed for the purpose of raising funds for the establishment of the Imperial Institute, Sir Charles Tupper, High Commissioner for Canada, who has been appointed Honorary Secretary, explained that the establishment of the Imperial Institute responds to the wishes of the Queen as the most acceptable form of showing the loyalty of her subjects and of celebrating the jubilee year of her reign. He considered that an Institute would be a mutual compliment to the Queen and to the colonies. The Committee had no idea of re-opening the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, but would fonnd the Institute, making the exhibits a nucleus.
