MR GLADSTONE. London, September 21. Mr Gladstone arrived in London today from Bavaria. MR GLADSTONE AND SIR G. GREY. Mr Gladstone has written to Sir G. Grey expressing his gratification at there being fifty members of the New Zealand Assembly favourable to Home Rule, which Mr Gladstone states is necessary to secure the happiness of Ireland, and tee safety and renown of the Empire.
QUEENSLAND SEPARATION. Dr Ah came has presented the Colonial Secretary with a monster petition in favor of the separation of North from South Queensland; The Hon E- Stanhope, in receiving the same, said the Government must decline to consider the petition until it was in receipt of the views of the Queensland Ministry on the subject of the proposed separation.
LAND LAW AMENDMENT. The debate on the motion for the second reading of Me Parnell’s Irish Land Bill commenced to-day. Mr Gladstone spoke, and expressed his concurrence with the necessity of temporary relief being afforded to the Irish tenants. He stated he would vote lor the second reading. Mr Mathews, Home Secretary, in a forcible speech, demanded the rejection of the Bill. It is expected the division will be taken to-night.
AQUATICS. A sculling match took place to-day on the Thames, between Kemp and Bubear, for j£ioo a-side. It resulted in a victory for Bubear. THE NEW HEBRIDES. ; At an interview between the Hon. E. Stanhope, Secretary for the Colonies, to-day, Mr Garrick, AgentGeneral for Queensland, was informed that Government entetjtaios hopes of an amicable settlement with. -Frifece of the New Hebrides question, and that the question of deportation of criminals to the Pacific is still under consideration between the British and French Governments.
Sir F. D. Bell, in a letter to the Timm, suggests that France and England should act in concert with regard to the New Hebrides, France to have jurisdiction over the island, but to undertake measures to prevent the place becoming an Alsatia.
