LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The usual weekly meeting of the Ashburton Musical and Dramatic Association was held at the Town Hall last evening. There was a good attendance, and one new member was elected. A long discussion took place as to the advisablcness of the Society putting in preparation a pantomime to be held at Christmas. The matter was ultimately left over till next meeting for final consideration. It was decided that a rehearsal of the drama “ False Colors ” should be held on Friday next at the Oddfellows’ Hall. It was decided that the farce “ Leave it to me ’ should be presented on the race nights. Under the heading “ Personal ” the Prrss says:—“ The friends of Dr Tweed in Lyttelton will be pleased to learn that ho has decided to settle in this colony. He has purchased the practice of Dr Ross at Ashburton. Dr Tweed, it will be remembered, came out as Surgeon-Superintendent of s.s lonic, and acted as locum towns for the late Dr Rouse, and recently for Dr T. O. Guthrie.” The San Francisco mail arrived at Auckland to-day. The Ashburton portion of the mail will probably reach here on Monday evening. A curious application was made to His Honor Mr Justice Johnston in Jianro at Christchurch yesterday. This was for an order, 'the applicant being the Minister for Public Works, for an injunction prohibiting His Honor himself from sitting in a compensation case to be brought against the department by Hon, J. McLean, of Ashburton. His Honor declined to adjudicate in the matter, and advised Mr Joynt, who represented the Minister, to make his application either at Dunedin or at Wellington.

An entertainment was given to the inmates of the Old Men’s Homo on Tuesday evening last. Mesdames Thomas, Crisp, and Mayne, Miss M. J. Otway, and Messrs Thomas and H. Gates gave musical selections, which were much appreciated. At the conclusion the Master thanked the performers for the treat provided. The Kev George Austen, who has been offered the bishopric of Melbourne, is about 40 years of age, having taken his B.A. degree at St John’s College, Combridge, in 1803. He obtained the first place in the first class in moral science in 1802, and the Cairns University prize for knowledge of the Greek Testament in 1861. Mr Austin has been rector of Whitby, Yorkshire, since 1875.

la the course of a leading article on our educational system, the Auckland Bell says: ‘Wo cannot help fearing that the muchvaunted New Zealand educational system will turn out a race of prigs, possessed of a great deal of book-learning, but wanting in moral character, in physical strength, and in the knowledge of the world, which supplies tact, and that wonderfully useful quantity which can only be expressed by the two French words .w raie faire." In discussing the rabbit question at a meeting of the Wool Growers’ Association held at Christchurch, on Saturday, Mr J. D. Lance stated that it had been calculated that a pair of rabbits left unmolested would produce, in three years, 13,718,000, leaving 0,859,000 does to continue the multiplication. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council will be held on Monday evening. One of our farmers (says the Nap ice Tel graph) sent up to Auckland a short time since some cattle for sale, and amongst them some thoroughly lino bullocks, which realised nearly £l2 each in the Auckland market—a price which was considered very satisfactory to the shipper. The purchaser of the animals sent them on to Sydney, where they were immediately sold and fetched £22 10s each. The party who sent this information wires that had they been held a week longer they would have fetched £25 each. This shows what benefit the settlers would derive if they chartered a steamer so as to trade direct with Sydney. In the meat market beef is fetching 3Ss the lOOlbs.

The best known remedy is SANDER and SONS' EUCALYPTI EXTRACT. Test its eminent powerful effects in coughs, cold, influenza, etc.—the relief is instantaneous. Thousands give the most gratifying testimony. Ilia Majesty the King of Italy, and medical syndicates all over the globe are its patrons. Read the official reports that accompany each bottle. We have no occasion to ofi’er rewards in proof of the genuineness of our references. The official reports of medical clinics and universities, the official communication of the Consul-General for Italy at Melbourne; the diploma awarded International Exhibition, Amsterdam all these are authentic documents, and, as such, not open to doubt. We add hero epitome of one of the various cases treated by Siegen, M.D., Professor, etc. ; Burning of the right hand through the explosion of a small oil stove. The epirdermis on the volar and palmer side of the hand of the, thirty-year-old patient was completely separated and lifted up as far as the joint of the hand. The likewise lifted nails were hanging loose, and half of the phalanx of the nail of tint middle finger was coaled. The wounds thus contracted healed in three weeks under daily applications of Eucalypti Extract dressing The patient has etained the full use of hand.—(Advtfi
