INTERCOLONIAL FOOTBALL MATCH.

Christchurch, September 15

The return match between the Sydney footballers and the Canterbury team took place to-day at Lancaster Park. The weather was beautifully fine, but the attendance of the public was not so large as at the last match. The Canterbury team was the same as previously. In the Sydney team Shaw, Austin, and Carr took the places of Allan, Blanchard, and Walker. The game was faster than the previous one, but in the first spell Canterbury scored rapidly, making 15 points Webb, Helmore, Horner, an d Bean scored tries, from one of which Boan kicked a goal. Francis potted a magnificent goal from the fie’d. In the second spell the Sydney men livened up, and frequently got the ball into their adversaries’ quarters, but the Canterbury forwards soon removed the danger. Canterbury only scored two more points, a try being obtained by Fooks, from which Bean took the kick, but missed. When time was called Canterbury had won the match by 17 points to nil.

.At a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union last night the following telegram was read from the manager of the Sydney team of footballers :—“Cannot detain steamer : sorry to disappoint you, What will you guarantee for match Saturday if wo play you instead Wellington ? Leave Auckland for Sydney Wednesday. Reply Warner’s Hotel, Christchurch," The meeting having discussed the above telegram carried the following resolution “ That the Secretary be instructed to telegraph a reply as follows :—“ 1 am instructed by the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union to reply to yonr telegram of to-day’s date, to Inform you that the Union will not, under any consideration, offer you any pecuniary inducement to break your engagement with Wellington Union, and regrets such motives should Influence any football team. lam also directed to aay that the Hawke’s Bay team absolutely decline to play the Sydney team, and a copy of your telegram and this reply will be sent to Wellington.”
