At the inquest on Michael Ding a verdict of “ Accidental Death ” was retained, with a rider that the Government should post a notice on the railway where deceased was Killed. “ Trespassers will bo prosecuted ” Wellington September 15.
Ooionel Haultain, Mr Weatenra (of Christchurch), and ex-Judge Harvey, have accepted the appointment of Commissioners to inquire into the Stark purchase In Auckland.
Dunedin, September 15. Two protests were received to-day against the motion passed at the last meeting of the Benevolent Trustees, whioh is generally regarded as a refusal to hire out an inmate because the applicants attend a Freethought Lyceum. Some of those who voted stated that they did not do so on religious grounds, bat a motion to rescind the resolution was negatived.
The Charitable Aid Board has decided to call a special meeting to levy another £3OOO under the amended Act. The Caledonian Society have received Hudson’s acceptance of Dunn’s challenge for the wrestling championship, but no deposit accompanied it, and the Secretary has wired to Dunn that unless the £lO deposit was immediately covered the belt would be forfeited. Though this was sent on the 10th, no reply has yet been received.
A curious discovery has been made near Roxburgh. A gentleman walking among tbe tussocks no tic 3d a nut above the ground, and palling at this brought to light the worm of a still. On communicating with the police a search was made and a plant, almost complete, was found. It was taken to the Police Station, where it is understood the owner may make claim to it if he cares to do so. Invercargill, September 15.
The Bluff Harbor Board, with the view of encouraging trade, yesterday made substantial reductions in the towage, pilotage, and wharfage rates, in some cases amounting to 50 per cent. At Mataura yesterday two young men, named Sampson Gregg and William Johnston, were committed for trial on a charge of shooting and stealing bullocks, the property of Mr Thornhill, of Bentlow station. R. E. Howell was also committed for alleged cattle-stealing in the Western district.
