Two protests were received to-day against the motion passed at the last meeting of the Benevolent Trustees, whioh is generally regarded as a refusal to hire out an inmate because the applicants attend a Freethought Lyceum. Some of those who voted stated that they did not do so on religious grounds, bat a motion to rescind the resolution was negatived.

The Charitable Aid Board has decided to call a special meeting to levy another £3OOO under the amended Act. The Caledonian Society have received Hudson’s acceptance of Dunn’s challenge for the wrestling championship, but no deposit accompanied it, and the Secretary has wired to Dunn that unless the £lO deposit was immediately covered the belt would be forfeited. R. E. Howell was also committed for alleged cattle-stealing in the Western district.
