TEMPERANCE MEETING AT REMINGTON.
[FROM A CORRESPONDENT. 1 Ona of the most enj yable Q-spei Temperance meetings we ever remember took place at Flemington on Friday evening last, and was well attended. The Rev A. Blake presided, and after devotional exercise, delivered a capital address, basing his remarks on a temperance stst a ment which appeared in the JLehburton Guardian. The rev ger.t'eman pointed oat the success of the cause they advocated, at the same time showing that there was still work to be done. Amongst other efforts which might be put forth, Women’s Temperance Unions might bai formed with pr«t advantage. The hymn, “Yield not to Tempt tion,” was then sang, after which Mr Dunn read •* Another Glimpse of Home Life.” Florrie Prebble (a child of four years) sang “ Mary had a little lamb ” surprisingly well, and Mr B* m’ey’s ] reading “ Fcr A aid Lang Syne.” which followed was a masterpiece. Mr James Osborne was encored for h « song “The Happy Temperance Army, afterwards singing to the amusement of the Juvenile portion of the audience, “ Wee-wee Wee wee ” Mr K. Gilmour as usual created much fua by his reading “The Scotchman’s mistake on the underground railway.” Mr G Gilmour’ssorg “ Falling hard against the stream, was well sung and highly appreciated by the audience'. Master S. Anderson recited a capital piece, “I am but small.” The piece which took the most during the evening was “ The Professor of Physic, acted by Messrs H. Steel and Marten, from Ashburton. Too mush praise cannot be accorded these young g.mtlemaß for the way In which their various parts were taken. Mr Wheeler sang In a most taking manner “ Joe Perkins,” the audience taking op the chorus. A reading by the Chairman brought the meeting to a close, when the people dispersed to talk over the enjoyment they had experienced.
