LOCAL AND GENERAL.
We notice that Mr R. Elston has taken a lease of the Oddfellows’ Hall. Mr Elston has been custodian of the Town Hall ever since its erection, and bis careful management of that speaks well of his ability to conduct his new venture. We remind our readers of the lecture to be given in the Oddfellows’ Hall, to-morrow evening, on mission work in India. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Hampstead School Committee will bo held to-morrow evening. The Hakatero Town Board meets this evening. 1
At the R.M. Court this morning, before
Mr T. Bullock, J.P., John Connor, for dunkenness, was fined 10s andjeosts, with the alternative of 21 hours’ imprisonmet. A grand concert in aid of the Ashburton Catholic Church school funds is announced for Thursday next, in the Town Hall. The services of the Orchestral Society have been secured for the occasion, and most of our leading vocalists and instrumentalists have promised their assistance. Between the parts of the programme there will be examples of Irish and Scotch step-dancing, end altogether a very excellent programme may be looked for. The musical part of the proceedings will be under the direction of Mr J. H. Brooks, Wo have to acknowledge, with thanks, receipt of the Union Steam Ship Company’s 1 Time Tables for the current month.
The Government has received the following cable message from the Agent-General, relating to the Midland Railway;—“Midland. Firstjoontraot signed, twenty-five miles, Sti’!water to Teremakau. First issue shares placed. Hoare leaves end September via San Francisco.’’ The Mr Hoare alludedj to is one of the directors of the Mid’and Railway Company, and also a director of Lloyds, Barnet, and Bosanquet’s Bank, London. The following is a list of letters received a the Ashburton Post Office from places beyond the colony during the month of July, and! remaining unclaimed on September IstJ. Allan, DavidJJones, Con o’Su”ivan. Toe ordinary monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Council will be held tomorrow.
The rainfall for August at Alford Station was 956 inches, at Alford Forest, 12 40. This is the heaviest fall yet recorded in any one month.
It has been definitely decided to hold the bazaar in aid of the Ashburton Wesleyan Church trust fund at the latter part of nest month, commencing on the 23rd and concluding on the 30th October. For a long time past the ladies of the congregation have been assiduously engaged in preparing the thousand-aud-one commodities usually vended at fancy fairs, and in these efforts, we understand, received valuable assistance from members of sister churches. The character of the goods already on hand gives promise that the various stalls will be profusely arranged with exceptionally useful and attractive articles. Mr A. On notifies a continuation of clear-' ing sale of drapery. usual weekly meeting of the Ashburton Dramatic and Musical Association will be held in the Town Hall this evening, when, It is announced, a coffee supper” will be provided. Mr Bullock announces that on account of ’ithographio plans of Mr Books’ property, near the Woollen Factory, not having yet been prepared the sale previously announced to take place on Saturday next has been postponed for a week from that date.
