Pipe. Auckland, August 3D. A large house at Wairoa South, belong ing to Graham, was burned down hat night. The cause was the bursting of a kerosene lamp. The insurance, which is not known, is believed to be in the New Zealand office. Native Marauder*. The Tnhourangi Natives at Rotorua, who lire receiving relief rations from the Government, have driven off a flock of sheep into the bush. Tanner, the son of the owner, surprised the robbers shooting and skinning the sheep, when the Natives fled. The police are now in pursuit. Conference of Sheep Inspector*:
Wellington, August 30. About the end of next month a conference of Sheep Inspectors of the various colonies will be held at Sydney, to consider the question of uniform regulations for sea borne sheep, and generally to discuss matters relating to the interchange of sheep between the Australasian colonies. New Zealand will be represented. It may be mentioned that the colony is now practically clean, but will not be officially so declared for some two months. Another dip will be forced in certain districts. In the South Island a large number of sheep have been killed in order to eraiicate scab. Relief. The Hinemoa during her northern trip will collect at the various points along the coast food which has been collected by the Natives for the Tuhourangis In the Rotorua district. The Maoris have been very liberal In leading a helping hand to their brethren In distress, one tribe having set aside eome excellent land for them. Abont 20 tone of provisions were sent here.
The Tatirr Minister. Mr Ballanoe leaves on Wednesday for Wanganui and will afterwards visit the Coast as far as Parihaka. He will then inspect the district devastated by the eruptions. The Police-
It has been suggested in view of the First Offenders Probation Act that the police shonld bo placed under the Depart* went of Justice, hut now that they are in a state of transition it is not likely to be done st present. Next year It is probable some step] will be taken in this direction. The objection chiefly applies to this Island^^^^^^^^^
