CHRISTCHURCH ITEMS
Chbistchubch, August 18 There was no sign of the Wanoka, which left Dunedin at 3 p.m. on Monday, this afternoon. The weather was so thick at Lyttelton Heads that the sea was not visible from the pilot station. As the Wanaka must have had a heavy sea and N.E. wind against her, with a lee snore, she has probably stood out to sea, wailing for the weather to clear. Captain Kennedy, of the steamer Hauroto, which arrived from Wellington this moi.<"ig, states that a tremendous sea was running on the coast. It is still raining heavily here. At the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court this morning Kate Kelly was committed for trial charged with the manslaughter of her husband, Thomas Kelly. A serious land slip has occurred at Pigeon Bay, completely wrecking Mr Hay’s bouse, which afterwards caught fire. No ’ivea were lost, all the family managing to make their escape. Every assistance was rendered by .settlers.
The roads on the Peninsula are impassable, and to-night great damage was feared unless the rain abated.
