At the half-yearly meeting of the Federated Seamen’s Union, at Dunedin, a resolutio n was passed in connection with the threatened strike of seamen in Syd ssing determination to resist the demands of ship owners lor a reduction of wages. A plumber named Alex. Clough, and » boy named Joseph Conper, were severely injured by an explosion at the gas works at Dunedin. Clough was engaged charging a receiver for the purpose of generating hydrogen, when he incautiously lit a match and an explosion followed. Clough was much injured about the face, while the lad has one of his eyes affected. Cross actions of a heavy character are now pending between Mr Ward, of Blenheim, and the Bank of New Zealand. The Bank has sued Mr Ward for a large sum of money alleged to be due, and Mr Ward sues the Bank on two alternative claims of £55,000 each, as damages for alleged breach of covenants in relation to transactions connected with two runs in the Marlborough district. Mr Travers is acting as solicitor fo Mr Ward, and Messrs By, Stafford and Barton for the Bank. A meeting of the Hakatere Town Board was held at the Board's office, Hampstead, last evening. Present —Messrs F. T. Mayo (chairman), Andrews, and Fawcett. The Clerk was instructed to make representations to the Government with regard to the differ* ence between the Wakanni Road Board and the Town Board. The Chairman reported having received a letU r from Mr Ivesa, M.H.hJ stating that the Board’s petition in reference to changing the name of the district had been presented to tbe proper authorities. It was resolved that the members present should be a financial committee to arrange with the bank, and the Board adjourned for a fortnight.
