A Store Burned. Auckland, August 4. A general store belonging to Harry Hickson, at Mangakakahia, between Dargaville and Whangarei, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday morning. Over £3OO worth of stock and kauri gum was lost The premises and stock were insured in the Union office for £2OO. Auckland Presbytery. The Auckland Presbytery decided densely not to grant the Rev J. McKellar’s application to practice law in conjunction with his work as a minister. The Rev R Me In uey was appointed Moderator of the Presbytery. The resignation of the Rev T. McLean, of Waiapu, on account of ill-health, was accepted. At the adjourned meeting to-day the Rev W. Somerville remarked that Mr McLean’s health would have been better had he taken his advice and married. All he wanted was a wife to take care of him, (Laughter) Dismissed.
Mr Seth Smith, R.M., this morning dismissed a charge of rape against a Maori, Tairoa Pepere, aged 76 years, at the instance of a half-caste widow. The hearing of the evidence occupied three days The Magistrate did not call on the defence, but said it was the most flimsy case he had ever heard.
Fire. Palmerston .North, August 4
A six rooared house, owned by J Hutton, and occupied by himself and family, was destroyed by fire early this morning. Tne occupants had a narrow escape for their lives. Little or nothing was saved.
