THE WELLINGTON AND MANAWATU RAILWAY.
Wanganui, August 2. The Longburn-Otiki si c ion of the Wel-lirgtor-Manawatu Railway line was oi ened to-day. The ev nt was celebrated by a general holiday being observed at Palmerston North and other districts. The Company ran excursion trains at a cheap rate, an I some 700 or 809 residen's from Palmers on and surrounding districts availed themselves of the opportunity to rap down to Otski. A large number also went north from tho lower The line opened to-day is about forty miles in iangth, and, with the exception of enu slight grade, is level throughout. The opening of th’a section connects Nev Plymouth by rail with Welling'on except twenty-two miles between Otaki and Palkakarikl, but contracts for these are well advanced, and It is expected tie/ wiU be handed over in about three ninths. Shonld|thisJbe so, the complete lino will be opened on orlabout November 9 h.
