Wellington, July 30. This afternoon was spent in Committee on the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Bill, the various proposals for the subdivision of districts being one after another negatived. The first proposal was that for making Piako County a separate district, which was lost by (na cnly. Had it bo-n carried, in all probability the other eff >rts in a like direction would have been anccessfcl. The proposed separation of Wairarapa from Wellington was lost by five. Mr Walker made a gallant} fight for tbs’separation of Ashburton, bringing forward many cogent arguments, bat was defeated by two votes. Major Steward proposed to make Waimate County a separate district, but had no chance after the defeat of the Ashburton case, as members felt that it wonld not be fair to grant the desire of one district after refusing others. The division accordingly showed a majority of 16 against this proposal. Those which followed were lost on the voices.
