An Unscrupulous Butcher. Auckland, July 16
The City Council last right authorised the prosecution of a butcher who sold cancerous beef for human food. An enquiry made by the Butchers’ Association shows the diseased animal was bought at the saleyards for 30a. It was slaughtered at Abbot’s farm, formally condemned, then taken to a butcher’s shop, then Bold to another butcher for 12s per cwt. The latter finding it ur fit for consumption, returned It, when It was sent to 'he boiling down establishment. Attempted Incendiarism. Woodville, July 16. A deliberate attempt was made some time after 1 this morning to barn down large buildings here known as Cowry's block, comprising four shops with dwelling-houses, a large temperancs bo el and two shops. The fire was discovered at the back of a butcher’s shop next to the temperance hotel and had a good hold of the building. A heap of rags and shavings saturated with kerosene was fiaming underneath. Sudden Death. Wellington, July 16, Eichard Beil, a bailin’, died suddenly last night or this morn ng. Be was in possession of the Waterloo Hotel on behalf of the Official Assignee, and was found dead in bed. He was aged 72.
The Missing Man. The statement that Levy had arrived at Sydney is denied. Still Missing.
The Government has received a c.ible staging that Levy has not turned up in Sydney.
Midland Railway. Christchurch, July 16. Mr O. C. Bowen, Chairman of the West Coast Railway guarantors, has received a cablegram that a coi t r act for a portion of the railway has been let to Ochione and Robinson. Robinson is on his way out and is expected to reach Invercargill in a week’s time.
The Aorangi. Port Chalmers, July 16. Arrived —ILM.S. Aorangi, at 11.5 p m. yesterday, after a fine passage of 39 days, 3 hrs, 30 min, including all stoppages and detentions. the bungs a full cargo, 33 saloon, 156 steerage passengers, and 283 bags of mails. After transhipping the mails and pas engers for Canterbury and Dunedin outside the Hearts, she sailed for Wellington. Bhe left Plymouth on June 6th, arrived at Madeira on June 10, left again the same day, reaching Capetown on June 25. Having embarked passengers and mails she left, again the same evening, and ran down her easting in lati’ude 45 ' From the C ape she averaged 334 miles per day, passed the snares at 3ain on J u ! y 13.
