ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary ovmtnty meeting of the Ashburton School Committee was held at !he Borough School last evening. Present—Messrs Dimant, Elston, Craighead, sod >"awle. Mr Dimant was voted to the chair.
COBRESPONDBNCB. I Correspondence was read.—(l) From! Board of Education confirming Miss j Stewart's appointment as headmistress to the school. (2) From same, forwarding I copies of Education Act and Regulations. I (3) From Miss Hatband, expressing I thanks for the kind resolution regarding I her passed bv the Committee. (4) From I Mr W. 0. Walker, M.H.K promising to I support Major Steward’s Education Act 8 Amendment Bill. (4) From Mr J. E. Bnoh-1 a anan agreeing to examine the school I ® for prises (6) From Mr O. Hogg, re- ' gretting that his duties would not admit I 1 of his taking part in the examination for I 8 prizes. (7) From the Rev S R. Otway, j c stating that he felt desirous of giving I < j religious instruction to those children 1 whose parents were willing that they 1 1 should receive such instruction, and ask- j iog for the use of the school for such j purpose. He suggested that if the Com-1 mlttoe favorably entertained the request j he should have the use of a room from 12 j to 12.43. —After a conversational disca'* j sion, it was resolved—“ That after due da- 1 liberation the Committee find it unprac 1 finable to accede to Rev Mr Otway’s! repuest.” (8) From the Board of! Ed.cation, asking for information with! regard to a library, if such an institution I ’ existed in connection with the school. —lt i was resolved to reply that there was no 1 i library belong ng to the Ashburton School. (9) From the same, with reference to *• gymnastic apparatus,—Rafererd to visiting 3 Committee. j master’s report 7 The Master reported as follows:—The number on the roll during the past quarter 6 was ; boys 200, girl 212, total 412 ; and 0 average, boys 154 5 girls 155 3, total s 309 8. The average is somewhat lower than that of previous quarters, but can easily be accounted for by bad weather v and prevailing sickness, I append list of children who did not attend 60 times 6 (No, of times possible, 115) I have re--8 oeived, on behalf of the prize fund; from • surplus at the concert, £4 16< 6d, and o >ld looted by Chairman £5 14s 61, total £lO lls. I would ask for Suooommittee to select prizes, and that the Chairman give '» them out on Friday afternoon. Miss f Stewart has entered upo.i her duties, and d the claages under her charge already show great improvement on their attention to their work. If possible, I should like 8 the Committee to obtain six reading '• stands or desks for the use of the teachers.
ATTENDANCE. The clausa in tha h iadravster's report with reference to non-attendance of children was left in the hands of the Chairman to deal with. PHIZES The Chairman and M - Dimant were appointed a sub-Coramittee to select prizes. READING STANDS The Chairman was empowered to procure the reading stands applied for by the headmaster. REPORT. Mr Dimant reported having In company with Mr Elston, visited the school and found everything In good working order. Thera was a thick growth of ivy on one of the wall' of the caretaker's house, which required removal.—lt was resolv Ito have the ivy taken away. VISITING COMMITTEE M. ssm Craghead and Sawle were appointed a visiting Committee for the ensuing mouth. PAYMENTS. Accounts, amounting to £lB Is 3d were passed for payment, and the Committee adjourned.
