A lire broke out in the Wellington Woollen Factory’s Works on Sunday, but was extinguished before much damage was done. At a meeting of the Dunedin Charitable Aid Board to consider thojamending Bill, it was resolved to remonstrate strongly against the proposal to make section 3 of the amending Bill retrospective, and the opinion was expressed that if the Government persisted in forcing through the Bill in its present shape, it would bo for the Board to consider whether they would resign and throw the onus of managing the institutions on the Government. It was pointed out that under the interpretation put on the Act in the first instance only £SOO was required for the Industrial School, but it would now cost £2OOO.
At a meeting of the directors of the Corn Exchange, held at Christchurch on Saturday, a long discussion took place upon the advisableness of altering the size of wheat sacks from four to three bushels, and it was ultimately resolved—“ That a circular be addressed to those interested asking that delegates may be appointed to confer with a Committee appointed by the CorosExohange to consider the necessity or otherwise of making the change.”
A meeting of the Tinwald Sports Committee was held at the, Tinwald Hotel on Saturday evening. Present—Messrs Lewis (in the chair), Scott, James, McLeod, Begg, Heseltine and Jephson. The Chairman, on behalf of Mr Porter, drew attention to the case of the horse Larrikin, the owner of which jhad accepted for the Handicap Trot under a misapprehension. It was resolved to refund to the owner the amount of the acceptance. A statement of accounts in connection with the race meeting was read as followsßeceipts ; Entries, £69 18s 9d ; cards, £3 10s ; confectioner’s booth, £4 10s; publican’sjbootb, £lO ; totalisator, £26 os; gates, £33 15s; member’s subscriptions, £9 9s 6d; horse sale, £l3 10s ; ball proceeds, £7 ss; protests, £3; balance forward, £ll 12s 2d; total, £192 loa. Expenditure: Prize money, £IOO 11s 6d; athletic prizes, £l6 2s Gd ; sundry accounts, £26 7s 9d; band, £7 10s; Han-old, £1 ; Heseltine, £2; cheque book, 8s 4d ; protests, £3; or. balance, £35 11s lid; total, £192 15s.—The Secretary was directed to take' the necessary steps to form a racing club for the district, and to prepare a petition to the Tinwald Domain Board, praying the Board to allow a racecourse to be laid off in the Domain. An honorarium of £5 5s was unanimously voted to the Secretary. The Committee then adjourned.
An ordinary moetingj.of the Coldstream Road Board was held on July 6. ■ Present— Messrs E. G. Wright (Chairman), Dobson, Dowding, MoKeage and Withell. : The drain pipes across the Main South road near Windermere were reportedjjjto).: have given sway, and thej.Chairman.'wasJ authorised to have them taken up and a ford substituted. Messrs DobsonlandjWitholl reported on the condition of bridges and crossings on Beach road, and the recommendations contained in the report were'adopted, It was resolved to form about 15 chains'on east end of Brogden’s road, that part of the road being almost impassable during the winter, Mr Dobson consented to draw out specifications and call for tenders for the said work. Accounts, amounting to £64 4s 9d, were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.until September 6.

Yesterday morning the members of the Ashburton Orange Lodge, to the number of about fifty, assembled at the Orange Hall and marched in proceesion to the Presbtyerian Church, where an appropriate sermon was delivered by the Rev Mr Stewart, of South Rakaia. The annual banquet in connection with the Lodge will be held at the Royal Hotel this evening.
The fourth annual football match between teams representing Christ’s College and Dunedin High School took place in Christchurch on Saturday. Thp representatives of the High School won by 13 points to nil.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council will be held this evening.
A meeting of tho Committee of the Trades, men’s Racing Club will be held at the Com' mercial Hotel this evening.
A meeting of the Mount Somers Presbyterian Church Committee was held on Wed. nesday last, Mr O. Buechler in tho chair. It was reached that tho Chairman should issue circulars inviting the members of the congre. gation to contribute towards the Church Fond by either of the following plans (1) By quarterly or half-yearly subscriptions, as heretofore. (2) By fortnightly contributions, enclosed Jin envelopes, and collected after each service. The Committee expressed themselves in favor of the latter plan. A soiree was projected, and the Chairman was requested to obtain information as to assist, anoe likely to be forthcoming. The amount neoossary to be collected during the present quarter was ascertained to be £9 10s, and
the Committee adjourned until the firs Monday iu August.
The Mount Somers School Committee met on June 30, Present —Messrs D. Macfarlano (Chairman), J. Hood, J. Carleton, R. Todd, R. Jones, and J. Murray. Correspondence was read from (he Board of Education, with reference to a library and gymnasium. The Master’s report was read and adopted. It was
resolved to give the children a week’s holiday while the porch was being enlarged. A considerable amount of dissatisfaction was expressed at the Inspector’s action with regard to passes. All the children in Standard I. had failed because drawing bad not been done in books. In regard to this the master explained that a circular letter had been received from the Minister of Education, suggesting that a considerable portion of the drawing should be done on slates. It was resolved, “ That the Board be communicated with on this matter, aud that ihe Committee suggest that some plain hard and fast rule be laid down, and that less should be left to the imagination of Masters and Inspectors.” The Committee then adjourned. A meeting of the Committee of the Ashburton County Hunt Club was held at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday evening. Present Messrs Stitt (Chairman), Wroughton, Bowyer, Sawlo.J Kemp, Patterson, J. Hunt, H. Hunt, Bunting, Saunders, Corbitt, Hart, Allen and Dr Leahy.—The Secretary reported arrangements made for the use of racecourse and totalisator in connection with the steeplechase meeting,—A telegram was read from the Wairau Hunt Club enquiring if the Ashburton beagles were for sale. It was resolved to reply that the Committee at present does not contemplate selling the bounds. Messrs Stitt Upton and Patterson were appointed a Committee to lay off the steeplechase course. It
was resolved to hold a Hunt Club ball and dinner, and Messrs Hart, Allan, Bowyer, and Wroughton, were authorised to make the necessary arrangements. The Committee then adjourned. Mr S. B. Nelson, G.M, of the Ashburton Orange Lodge, loft by the express this morning for Timaru, in order to perform the ceremony of laying tha foundation stone of a new Orange Hall at Pleasant Point.
We have received Ta copy of the Canterbury Jockey Club programme for the season IBBC-87, which, in addition to particulars of races to come, contains lists of nominations for all events closed and winners of previous races. Tha Ashburton County Council advertises its intention to make a general rate of threeeighths of a penny in the £ at its next ordinary meeting.
An Orange tea and concert was held at Springburn on Friday last. More than 100 persons sat down to an excellent tea, provided by Mr J. Jones of Mount Somers. The tables having been cleared, a concert was held, at which the Rev D. McNeill presided. Vocal and instrumental items were given in excellent stylo by Misses A. Price, M. Bennett, Mrs Rands, Messrs Brook, Vinten, Price, Jones, Brough, and the Mount Somers string and brass band The concert was followed by a dance.
