HAMPSTEAD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the Hampstead School Committee was held at the schoolroom last evening. Present— Messrs Mayo (Chairman), Hunt, Tayior, Lamb, Fawcett and Andrews. ROUTINE. The Chairman gave a b iof statement of the business transacted since last meeting. A letter was read from the North Canterbury Board of Education, asking if there was a library established at the school and if so, asking for particulars thereof.—The Chairrahn stated he had replied in tho negative. GYMNASIUM. A letter was read from the Education Board on this subject.—The Chairman stated he had applied for swings to be erected in the girls’ playground. RECUSXGATION. Mr Sando wrote, resigning his seat on the Committee.
Tho resignation was accepted, and Mr Johnstone was appointed to tho vacant seat RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION. Tho Rev E. R. Otway wroto, stating ho was desirous of giving religious instruction to those children attending tho school whoso parents were wiling that ho should do so. Ho asked if tho Committo would grant him tho use of the school on Thursdays from noon to 12 43 p. m. It was pointed out that the time suggested hy tho Rev Mr Otway woul 1 occupy tho greater pact of tho child r e-Vs lunch hour.
Some desultory discussioa took p ace, during tho course of which the memberof the Committee expressed themselves favorable to religious instruction being given, but did not think the time proposed was suitable. Ultimately it was resolved that the Bov Mr Otway might have the nso of the school either before or after school hours, as might be found suitable. master's report. The Master’s report was read and adopted. MISTRESS. Miss Stewart wrote resigning her position as Headmistress of the school, as she had received a similar appointment at the Borough School. A letter was read from the Board of Education, instructing the Committee to advertise for a Headmistress.
After discussion, Mr Andrews moved—- " That Miss Stewart's resignation be accented, and that she be released from her duties at the expiration of one month fro.n the date of her resignation."—Mr Fawcett seconded. Mr Hunt moved as an amendment—- " That Miss Stewart bo released immediately."—Mr Lamb seconded the amendment. Tho amendment was carriod. SEAL. Tho agent for the Graphic Rubber Stamp wrote, asking if the Committee desired to be supplied with a seal.—No action wis tnl"^. It was decided ua,. .tise for applications for the position of llcaJ'iiistresa. JIOtIiVAYS Mr Andrews moved that an extra week for the winter holidays be grauted —Mr Fawcett seconded. Mr Lamb proposed aa an amendmennt that tho school re-open at the dato previously fixed.—Mr Taylor seconded the amendment, which was carried. PAYMENTS. Accounts amounting to £3 5s 8d were passed for payment. RErAIRS. Mr Andrews was authorised to attend to some small repairs to doors and windows in the school. The Committee then adjourned.
