Christchurch, June 18. At. a meeting to-day convened by the Mayor it was resolved to take steps to resuscitate the Benevolent Association, and a Committee was appointed to interview the Charitable Aid Board on the subject. Alexander McPhail, who bad been sm ployed for eight mouths as gardener and coachman by Mr J. W. Baker, chief surveyor, was committed f< r trial to day, charged with stealing a quantity of valuable books aud other articles worth £3O in all. This afternoon 805 forfeited shares in the Southern Cross Petroleum Company were sold by auction at prices varying from 3d to |d per share.
