Auckland, June 9
It has transpired that when the Heme Rule resolutions carried at the Auckland meeting were cabled to Mr Gladstone, the Orangeman of Auckland sent a cable message to the Marquis of Salisbury stating that the meeting was not a representative of the people of Auckland, but merely of the Irish party here.
The four seamen who deserted from the American whaler Petiel at Russell have been sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. The inquiry into the charges against Captain Reid and the mate, Mr Foley, commenced to-day at Russell. A good deal of evidence was taken. It Is underetood that the investigation is only preliminary, and will have to be taken again at Auckland before the American Consul. The Captain and mate are mutually recriminating and blaming each Giber for (he state of affairs.
Wellington, June 9,
The Government, with the view to fostering local industries, will shortly call fortendersfor lOO.OOOinsulatora, with bolts and fasteners, the whole of which are to be manufactured in the colony. The Population of the North Island by the new census is 247,404, exclusive of Maoris and shipping population. At last census it was 193,047. The South Island returns ate not likely to be ready till tomorrow at the earliest.
Oamaru, June 9
At a meeting of policy-holders in the Government Life Insurance Association, held here to-night, it was unanimously decided to support Mr Fisher’s proposal. Dunedin, June 9. ' The Harbor Board’s big dredge came Into collision with the barque Othello, with the result that the latter sustained considerable damage.
