ASHBRTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The ordinary monthly meeting of the \sbbnrton Scuool Committee was held at the Boro -gh School isst evening. Prcreut Messrs J. C. "J*'} c-ju (Chairman), A. Craighead, W J, bilcoc-:, El, Elston, J. Sawle, and E Dimant.

7ho Committee decided to give their support towards the concert to be given by the school children In aid of the prize fund. PRIZES. It was decided to a?k Mr Hogg and Mr Buchuiaato undertake the examination of the children for p-izis.

MIDWINTER VACATION.

The clause in the headmaster’s report referring to the midwinter holidays was adopted. COAL. The tender of Messrs McCallnm and Co for a supply of coal was accepted, EDUCATION ACT AMENDMENT. Mr Dimant referred to the amendment to the FdocaMon tet, being brought forward by M'j t Steward He moved, that Mr W 0 Walker, M.H.R. for the district, he written to and respectfully re-, quested to lend bis support to Major Steward in his endeavor to amend the Education Act. Mr Sa»lo seconded.

The Chairman thought the motion was of too dictator.-.! a tone, and after a short discuss’on he moved as an amendment, that a letter be written to Mr W. O. Walker, MH.R., expressing the Committee’s hopa that he would support the amendments in question. Mr Craighead seconded the amendment which was carried on the casting vote of the Chairman

VISITING COMMUTES. Mr Diuaatit and Mi Elston were appointed a visiting Oomm.ttee lor the month. PARAPHERNALIA. Mr Silcock moved that each member of the Committee be suoplied with a copy of the Education Act an ' al. tne rales [and regulations, the same to be the property of the Committee. He referred to the inconvenience to which the members were pat at present through their being in the dark as to many matters embodied in Ordera-in Council and such like. Mr Elston seconded. Mr Dimant supported the motion, which was unanimously carried.

SPECIAL MEETING. It was resolved to hold a special meeting on the evening of the 23rd, to consider applications for the post of headmistress. The Committee then adjourned.
