The resolution for the new Customs duties having been passed, a Bill was brought in and passed its initial stages j Several members have informed the Government that they intend to oppose these duties step by step, and to take advantage ofgali the forma of the House to prevent them from passing. A large meeting held in the city has declared against the new duties as destructive to the trade of the port. Several large steamers have been laid 011 for Kmberley. Lord Carrington visited the Victoria yesterday, previous to her departure, and inspected all the arrangements. A large number of persons are leaving here for the new goldfield. The death is announced of the Hon. W. B. Sutter.
A.small quantity of rain has fallen in the country, and the prospects are somewhat brighter.
Melbourne, May 28, Th» Woolgrowera’ Association are busily making out a scheme for establishing woollen factories in China and Japan.
