MODEST DEMANDS.
(by telegraph.)
Auckland, June 3
A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon to consider a letter to the Minister for Public Works re ex tension of Main Trunk Railway line from Helensville northwards to Bay of Islands, a branch line from main trunk line to New Plymouth via Stratford, and a branch line from the main trunk line eastwards to Napier, asking that these lines might be made within five years. The letter was adopted, and it was resolved that a copy be forwarded to the Northern members, with a request that a caucus be called for its consideration, and, further, that a copy be forwarded to each Chamber of Commerce in the colony, County Councils, and Road Boards, with request that they should co-operate. It was also resolved to ask the Mayor to call another meeting to discuss the question of railways. The attention of the Northern members is also to be called to the fact that nothing definite was stated by the Colonial Treasurer as to raising the North Island Trunk Railway loan, and requesting them to bring the matter before the House.
