Wellington, May 14. At Gisborne a man named William Rowley was arrested to-day for attemptto murder a man named O’Neil. It appears tkat both men were working togeter. Rowley informed the police that T’Neil had shot himself, out subsequently suspicion fell on Rowley, and he wrs arrested. O’Neil was shot in the breast, and hia skull split open. He is in a precarious condition. The “Gazette" notifies the appointment of Mr A. R. F. Johnston as Lieutenarr, and the Ven Archdeacon E. A. 1 ingard as Hon Chaplain in the Richmond Rifles. The resignations of the Hon W. Peeves, P. Doyle (late of Christchurch), and F. Courage, of Amberley, as J P.’s have been accepted.

Since the imperative order to Kilgour to stop work in bis mine, the Railway Department have put a gang of workmen on the ground, who are engaged in putting a post and rail fence around the popet beads, the engine-house and the blacksmith’s shop, so as to ensure no work being carried on.
Dunedin, May 14 The compositors in the Otago Daily Times have gone out on strike. It is understood they objected to the proposed reduction, and on the proprietors giving way on that point, the men refused to workjunless an agreement were signed that no reduction would be attempted during the next 12 months.
ISVBKCALGILL, M»yl4. A deputation waited on the Chairman of the Now Biver Harbor BolHr which is Identical with the Borough Council, to urge that immediate steps be taken to place the Board in a better financial position. They suggested tba reconstruction of the Board, independently of the Council, getting rating powers over the district benefited, increasedjborrowlng powers, and a Promotion Bill. His Worship agreed, and said he would bring the proposal before the Council. W. J Greig, who is wanted In Dunedin on a charge of defrauding his creditors, was arrested at the Bluff, when about to join the Wairatapa for Melbourne. Dairy factories are getting vary numerous in this district, the latest being started at Hornbury, Wainawa and Waimutnku, on the Western Railway, and several others are projected.
