The Supreme Court was occupied yesterday and to-day with an action tried before a special jury to recover L I SOO, damages sustained by the Hon W. Clifford, owner of the Vernon run, in consequence of an extensive grass fire occasioned by a defective brick kiln belonging to defendants, Parker and Maddcck, contractors for tho Dashwood Pass Hailway contract. The case is stilt proceeding. The National Sport. The t*o racing clubs hitherto existing here have been amalgamated and start with a credit balance of L2OO and considerable assets A new course has been purchased upon Mr Charles Redwood’s property, and It is intended to remove the grand stand from the present course. At the most numerous racing meeting ever held in Marlborough, Henry Redwood was elected president of the amalgamated club. The new course will be ready for the spring meeting. Buggy Accident. Namkb, To day. A serious buggy accident occurred yesterday to Mr E. Patten, Collector of Customs, and his wife while driving down Monroe street. The whistling of a passing locomotive frightened the horses, which bolted down Edward, street into Hastings street and came into collision with a verandah post opposite Swan’s brewery. The concussion capsized the buggy and broke the verandah post, and an npper heavy beam fell on Mrs Patten, breaking both thighs. Mr Patten baa bis left leg broken. Fire.
Watt’s Hotel and store, Mohaka, were burned down last night, the ioma-es barely escaping with their livaa. Insured in the Union for L3OO Death. Christchurch, TV day Alfred Osborne,formerly su undertaker, died this morning from the effects of a fall on the steps of the Central Hotel on April 12. The Absconding Publican. Mrs Messenger, wife of the absconding publican, gave evidence this morning at the R.M. Court, under the Fugitive Offender’s Act, to the effect that he had left her and six children unprovided for since February last. Constable Allen goes to Melbourne, per Walrarapa, on Tuesday next to bring Messenger back.
