The Supreme Court was occupied yesterday and to-day with an action tried before a special jury to recover L I SOO, damages sustained by the Hon W. Clifford, owner of the Vernon run, in consequence of an extensive grass fire occasioned by a defective brick kiln belonging to defendants, Parker and Maddcck, contractors for tho Dashwood Pass Hailway contract. The t*o racing clubs hitherto existing here have been amalgamated and start with a credit balance of L2OO and considerable assets A new course has been purchased upon Mr Charles Redwood’s property, and It is intended to remove the grand stand from the present course. The whistling of a passing locomotive frightened the horses, which bolted down Edward, street into Hastings street and came into collision with a verandah post opposite Swan’s brewery. The concussion capsized the buggy and broke the verandah post, and an npper heavy beam fell on Mrs Patten, breaking both thighs. Mr Patten baa bis left leg broken. Fire.
