It is rsmored that Mr Childers, Chancellor of (he Exchequer in the Ist e Ministry, who has been defeated for hie former constituency by the Conservative candidate, intends contesting Chatham. The opinion given on the' matter is that the banks may be made liable for the collection of the tsz. The statement that Sir J. Gorst, Solicitor-General, was to be appointed successor to Sir M. Lopes as J edge of the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court of Justice, has proved to be premature. Samuel Grey, who has been arrested in Ireland on a charge of embezzling L3OO belonging to the Portland branch of the Union Bank, Victoria, a year ago, has been remanded nntil January, pending the arrival of further information. Bail has been refused.
Messrs Tyson and Co., who are en* gaged in an effort to break down the Australasian shipping ring monopoly, are nsing every effort to achieve their purpose, and state that they are resolved to persevere so long as the slighest prospect of final success remains.
