MR JOSEPH IVESS, M.H.R., AND THE ASHBURTON WOOLLEN FACTORY COMPANY.

To the Editor. Sib,—Among the questions which were put to Mr Joseph Ivess at the Town Hall on Monday, the 22ad alt., after having addressed the electors, was oue asked by Mr Thomas, as follows :—“ How far in matter of shares was Mr Ivess prepared to encourage the Ashburton Woollen Company,” to which our truthful M.H.R. for Wakanui replied '“ That ha had already speculated LSO in shares in the Ashburton Woollen Factory Company, and had lost it by the mismanagement of s me of those who had the affair in charge.” (Loud applause.) Aa one of the Directors allow me to point out that Mr Ivees’s statement, like many others he has made, is totally untrue. Mr Ivess made no such loss, as the following simple facte will show. Mr Ivess was registered as holder of ten shares in the above Company The paid-up value, per share, was L 5. On February 13th, ISB4, Mr Joseph Ivess , in consideration of the sum of ISO paid to him by Ernest Alfred Oamett, of Christchurch, transferred to the said Ernest Alfred Garnett the said shares. The transfer was duly registered in the books of the Company, and Mr Ivess's name does not appear again on the registry. It is clear then from the transfer, that this great champion of the working men, the champion of everything that Is good and truthful, the great supporter of local industries, has not lost a single penny, bnt that he had let the real working man in for it. This is then the man whom Wakanni has sent to Wellington, who without a blush, and for the sake of cheap popularity stands up on a public platform and makes such a deliberate false statement. Truly said by Mr Wright, “ 1 must feel pity for my opponents.” v I am, etc, Hugo Fbibdlandeb.
