London, Jaly 8 Later intelligence from Anam states that General Courcy, who is in command of the French troops, has arrested the Regent of Anam. Egyptian Convention. The French Government have ratified the Egyptian Convention. Thanks. Votes of thanks will shortly be passed by Parliament to New South Wales, and to the other colonies for their offers of men for the Soudan, and suitable rewards will be made to the members of the contingent for their services. Handsome. Thirty thousand pounds have been voted to the Princess Beatrice by Parliament. Approval. Mr Gladstone has endorsed the Afghan policy laid down by the Marquis of Salisbury. Failure. A no-confidence motion has been tabled by Sir Wilfred Lawson against the new Ministry, and has failed completely. The Markets. London, July 7. Adelaide wheat, off coast, has advanced by is 3d to 35s 6d. The Wool Sales. At to-day’s wool sales 8,400 bales were catalogued. The demand was steady, but not active.
Shipping. The New Zealand Shipping Co.’s Kaikoura left Plymouth last night for Auckland, calling at TenerifTe and Capetown en route. New Lord Lieutenant, The official entry of the newly-ap-pointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (Earl Carnarvon) into Dublin took place yesterday. His Excellency met with a most enthusiastic reception. A Special Mission. In the House of Commons yesterday in reply to a question, Sir Michael Hicks-Beacb, Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated that the Government knew no reason why Sir Henry Drummond Wolff should not proceed to Egypt upon a special mission as arranged. He denied that the presence of Sir Henry would be distasteful to the Khedive. National Basic. The National Bank of New Zealand published its half-yearly returns yesterday. The Directors report that they are not in a position to declare a dividend. The surplus for the transactions of the period, is to be carried forward and placed to the reserve. (Received Jnly 9,12.30 p.m.) Government Programme. London, July 8. In the House of Commons last night Sir Mfchael Hicks-Beach announced to the House the programme of legislation to be brought down by the Government, which includes, among other things, a measure for facilitating the federation of various parts of the Empire, Mr Gladstone spoke, and announcedjthe Opposition’s acquiescence in the proposals of the Government. An early close of the session is looked forward to.
