NEW ZEALAND CHEESE.
A London paper eaya:—“ We have received some particulars respecting the cheeses lately imported from New Zealand, and we regret to find the report on the condition of some of the consignments is not very favorable. That brought by the Aorangi the end of last March was, however. found to have been well manufactured, and to have been delivered in the best possible condition, through the perfect storage in the cold air chambers The prime qualities have been sold at the sane price as the best English Cheddar, namely, L 3 5s per cwt. But the consignment brought by the Rimutaka was found to be in a very different condition. The report on this consignment states that the chesses had the appearance of being almost boiled through great heat, that the flavor was bad, and that the cloths were soaked with oil. Some of the cheeses were in such a state they were almost unsaleable, while others are now selling at only 18s per cwt. This consignment being from the same factory as that brought by the Aorangi, and rf the same quality, was sold to arrive at 65s per cwt. This will be a heavy loss to the consignees, for although the damage, as we understand, was caused through a badly constructed cool chamber made purposely for the cheese—the regular freezing chamber being too full of sheep to take the cheese —the shipping company is not responsible, having taken the consignment at shipper’s risk. If better arrangements are not guaranteed in future, we fear the trade in New Zealand dairy produce will suffer considerably, as shippers are not likely to send their produce without getting some undertaking that their goods will be properly stored The Ruapehu, which brings a heavy consignment of cheese, is expected to arrive on Friday. ”
