Harbor BUL The Auckland Harbor Board Bill, prepared for presentation this session, is almost identical with the measure rejected last session, but contains no proposal to resume the control of the Manukaa Harbor.

The Chief Justice passed sentences on the following prisoners this morning : Fred Elmes alias Herd, stealing, nine months; Walter Johnston, altos Smith, obtaining money by false pratences, twelve months; John A. Mackenzie, issuing valueless cheques, nine months ; James Smith, alias Bussell, bigamy, three yean. Major Cautley. Wbujhoton, To-day. Major CanUey hands over charge of the defence works to-morrow. As a compliment to him one of the forts is to be nemed Osntley Fort, but it is not yet decided which. Minister of Mines. As the Mines Department is now a eaparate portfolio, the Son Mr Larnach has derided to make, at an early period of the session a Ministerial statement. In much the same way as the Minister of Public Works prepares his. The statement will he comprehensive, and will deal folly with the mining industries in each district In his statement Mr T*himli will recommend the adoption of Professor Black’s suggestion as to the establishment of mining schools, and for thftt purpose he has induced his colleagues to place a sum of about Li 17,000 on the Estimates. It la not, however, intended that the Government should bear the whole cost of Bach schools, ss they will only be established in districts where miners are willing to contribute to the cost. Sets of samples will be procured - fromEogland to assist in instructing the mining community in mineralogy, etc. From his recent tour of inspection Mr Irunach has ascertained that the princi- ' pal wants of miners are additional water Ewer and cutting of tracks through svily wooded country, so as to enable prospecting to be,carried on. Floods. Blew hum, To-day. The heaviest floods since February, 1877, occurred here last night. The greater part of the Blenheim streets are under water. The continued rains and melted snow on the ranges brought down the Wairau river, which has effected a breach into the Opawa river, and thence into the town. The Supreme Court criminal session opened to-day before Judge Johnston. There are six cases eet down for hear- ■ ing—one of attempted suicide, one of attempted murder, and one of murder; the others ate forgery, larceny, and embezzlement Thomas Woed, charged with attempted suicide by throwing himself in front of a tram on May 2, pleaded guilt j, but urged that he had bean drinking, and had gone wrong in his Witnesses gave him a good character otherwise, and be was discharged on his own recognisance for £,50 to come up for sentence. 1 Poaching. DmnDnr, To-day. At theQueenstown Police Court, Ranger Fennafatber, of the Southland Acclimatisation Society, was fined X 6 and costs for assaulting the Ranger of the Queenstown Society, who detected _ him and Tanner, of Invercargill, poaching on the Lake. The information against the latter ■ -was dismissed on technical grounds, but a Crash Information has been laid.
