[pkk PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Defence. Auckland, To-day. One hundred and thirty men are now at work on the harbor defences. Some of the guns were dragged up to the batteries yesterday. The Crimean Veterans’ Association have offered to raise a veteran company, composed of men who have served in the Imperial Army. The North Shore residents have decided to raise a corps of garrison artillery. Musical Composition. The Auckland Society of Arts medals for musical composition have been awarded by the judges, Professor Tindall, of Christchurch, and Judge Fenton to Allan Wbitehorn. Miss Bella Hastings, of Napier, was specially commended. Arrived. Wellington, To-day. Arrived fat 1 a,m.—Hauroto, s.e., from Sydney. Substantial Damages. Dunedin, To-day. In the Supreme Court in the case Murray v Brown for trespass, wrongful sale and assault, the jury returned a verdict of LSOO damages. North Island Railway. The first sod of the main trunk line was turned at Te Awamutu yesterday. Wahanui cut the sod, and the Premier wheeled the barrow. Speeches were made by Wahanui, Taonu), Riwi and other well known chiefs, and also by the Premier.
