Verdict for Defendant. Sydney, Saturday, A verdict for the defendants has been given in the libel action brought by Mr McElhone, M.P., against the proprietors of the Evening News. Soudan Troops. The Government received a telegram from the Agent-General, stating that nearly the whole of General Graham’s force has now reached Souakim, and that it will number altogether about 12,000 men, including the New South Wales contingent.
Cricket. The cricket match England v Australia commenced to-day on the Association’s Ground. The weather was splendid, and there was a very large attendance of spectators. The ground was in first-rate order, and the wicket was excellent. .The Englishmen went in first, and the innings closed for a total 0f269, thehighest individual scorers being-’-Shrewsbury, b, 40; Barnes, b, 50; Bates, c and b, 64; Maurice Reid, b, 47 ; Flowers,, b, 14; Peel, not out, 17. At the close of the day’s play the Australians had scored 12 with one wicket down. (Received March 16,1 p.m.) An Alarm. Melbourne, To-day. Th tAqe to-day states that information has reached the police which necessitates immediate precautions being taken for the safety of the Government House, the powder magazine and ether buildings. A mounted guard of six has been placed at Footscray Powder Factory, and a picked guard at the Government House. (Received March 16, 12.30 p.m.) The Malls. Melbourne, To-day. , Arrived—P. and O. steamship Pekin, with the English mails of 6th February. The Tainui. Hobart, To-day. The Shaw, Savill Albion Company’s steamship Taioui, from Plymouth (Ist February), arrived here on Saturday morning en route for Port Chalmers. (Received March 16,1.50 p.m.) No War Premium. Melboubne, To-day. The, Merchant Shipping and Underwriters Association are in receipt of a telegram from London, dated Saturday, stating that no war premium is as yet being charged to Australia.
