Ashburton Guardian Office, Saturday afternoon. j The following is the Christchurch Corn Ex- t( •Nang- report for the week ending Friday, 13th - nstantThe market for grain during the jast week has not evinced any tendency towards a change for the better. Home advices n ire still of such a depressing nature as to pre:lude the possibility of buyers advancing prices. The stock of wheat that continues to . be poured in' • the London market from all s quarters must naturally cause low prices to rule, and while India and America can send such enormous quantities there can be but a - small chance for the New Zealand farmers to - compete profitably, if we consider the lower prices of labor and freight from these count- , nes. Samples of grain are not coming in very freely, owing no doubt to the recent rains having caused the suspension of threshing, al- 1 though a very marked improvement in the ■ weather is now being experienced, and we may 1 anticipate greater briskness to result. Quotations as follows may now be said to be definitely fixed as the opening prices, numerous sales having been effected at these rates ; Wheat: New as 6d to 2sg d, chick feed is gd to 2s f.o.b.—-Oats ; Milling is nd, bright short feed is gd to is lod, other feed is yd to is 8d f.o.b. —Barley: Malting 3s 6d to 4s, feed is gd to 2s Christchurch.—Grass seed ; Rye, fanners’ cleaned 2s gd to 3s, machine dressed heavy 3s gd to 4s f.0.b., cocksfoot bright samples 3d to discolored and inferior 2d to 2}id f,o.b.—Dairy produce : Butter 6d to yd, cheese 4d to per lb f.o.b.
