Inquest. , Auckland, Last h ight. At the inquest on the body of Mary Spalding, aged 18, who died from injuries received a fortnight ago while stepping from a train in motion, at Penrose station, a verdict of “Accidental death” was returned.

Arrested. Federick Lacy, a passenger by the Manaponri, was arrested for stealing a diamond ring at an hotel in Wellington, and remanded to Wellington.

Death. Wellington, Last night. The l«d Billows, who was run over yesterday, died this morning.

Resignation. The Hon C. J.Pharazyn has resigned hie seat in the Legislative Council. It is understood that nothing will be done towards filling the vacancy until the return of the Governor, and probably it will not be filled then.

Pire. The stables belonging to Mr Valentino, proprietor of the Marine Retreat, Petone, were destroyed by fire early this morning. One horse and four greyhounds were destroyed. There was no insurance. John Straohan, shoemaker, and an old resident of Warepa, in CluthaCounty, died suddenly to day whilst on his way to the railway station at Balclutha. The cause was apoplexy. Otago University. At the meeting of the Otago University ; Council to-day, the report of the Commitn tee appointed to consider the School of Mines question was brought np.
