Arrived, last night—Wairara pa. Agricultural statistics. The official statistics published give the total yield of wheat in Victoria last season as 10,300,000 bushels, an average of 9.49 per acre. Ihe yield of oats and potatoes show a decrease compared with last year. (Received March 12, 2.45 p. m ) Precaution. Melbourne, To-day.
Extra naval precautions are being taken here, and the force will probably be materially augmented without delay. Attention is being given to the use of torpedoes for defensive purposes. Colonial Defences. _ Mr Sargood, Defence Minister, has approved of the proposal to invite Royal Navy officers to offer for service in connection with local defences. Considerable anxiety is expressed here regarding the present unprotected state at Albany, West Australia.
Federation. Despatches from Victoria, Soutn Australia, Queensland and Tasmania, on the subject of federation have been forwarded to London. New _South Wales has not yet replied, and it is understood here that the New Zealand Government generally objects to Lord Derby’s amendments to the draft Bill.
Conservative Victory. Mr Benjamin St. John Ackress, a Conservative,, has been elected to the House of Commons for West Gloucestershire vice Colonel Robert Nigel Kingscote, C. 8., Liberal, resigned.
