ASHBURTON CLUB.

An adjourned meeting of those interested m the formation of a Club for Ashburton was held at Fowler’s Buildings last evening. There was a large attendance and Mr S. B. Nelson occupied the chair.

The Chairman reported the business done by the Committee since last meeting. The Committee had communicated with the Christchurch Working Men’s Clnb, and they had received a reply from the President, Mr J.S. Thomson, expressing the favor with which be regarded the I establishment of a clubjin Ashburton. Thu Christchurch Club had been started with I only 24 members, and ■ from that small I beginning bad attained a great success. I The Chairman said that 80gentlemen had I inlimated their desire to join the I club, if formed, and he had I no doubt that the membership would J speedily number 50 or more. A copy of 1 the rules of the Christchurch Working I Men’s Club had been received.

Mr Amos, the interim secretary, read the letter received from the President of the Christchurch Working Men’s Club. The lettsr stated that the writer felt confident that the proposed Club would be a success ; it would supply a want felt in all centres of population.

Mr Thomson suggested that during the infancy of the Club the members should sign a guarantee for payment of rent, manager’s salary and other current expenses. The premises occupied should be at first leased with a right to purchase. The rules should be strictly enforced, and suitable amusements provided. A good reference Library would be found an especial boon. A debating class should |be started, bat religious and party discussions should be disallowed. Thirty members were quite sufficient to start the I Club. Refreshments should be procured I at the lowest wholesale price, but people I should not be induced to join by the pros--1 peot of cheap drinks. For information I respecting the preliminary steps to be taken I in forming the Club attention was directed Ito the Licensing Act, 1881, section 7> I sub-section D. In selecting premises the I following qualification should be sought ; I —Reading room for daily papers, card room, library, writing room, committee I room, social hall for conversation or I games, bar room, store, sad .secretary’s. I office. The premises should be in a oehI tral position, but not necessarily in the I principle street. Mr Thomson concluded his letter by stating that he .would be most happy to meet a sub-committee from the Ashburton Club either in Ashburton I or Ohristohurch. The clause of the licensing Act referred to by Mr Thomson, and the rales of the Christchurch Club were read. The Committee appointed at last meetI ing reported as follows:—A meeting was I held on March 6. A letter was read from Mr J. S. Thomson, the President of the I Christchurch Working Men’s Olob, and discussed at length; a'so the rules of that club. The committee were; of opinion that if the Christchurch Club started with only twenty-four members one could be started in Ashburton with thirty members. They thought that the premises known aa Fowler’s Buildings, were very suitable for the requirements of the Club ; they were on offer at 35s per week. It was thought that in the event of the Club being organised, the furniture required could be rented until fuods were available for its purchase. A list of sundries required was made up, the amount being about L2O.

The Chairman in reply to a question stated th it L 5 or L 6 would be sufficient to meet all preliminary expenses, as moat of the articles required could be obtained on terms. In his opinion Mr Fowler's building was a most suitable site "for the Club. It was resolved on the motion of Me Robertson, seconded by Mr Stephen*— “ That a Club be formed, to be carried on for three'months.” After some discussion as to the title of the Club, a motion proposed by Mr Taakar, and aeaondad_by_M?
