FIKE BRIGADE COMPETITION.
Dctnzdin, Yesterday.
The Fire Brigade Competition was continued to-day in fine weather, but the attendance of the public was wretched, all interest having apparently vanished. Bren “ the members of the Committee did not roll up in force. The tie for the second place in hose practice was run off, anc at the first attempt both men did it in 54J secs, and at the second attempt Qulliver, of Wanganui, did it in £0 secs, and Tattersall, of Dunedin, in half a second longer. The Hose and Ladder Practice—Five men to run 10 yards, pick np reel, run 100 yards to fire-plug, fix hydrant, run out 100 ft canvas hose, fix branch, and show water.
The judges awarded the prizes in the following order:—
..secs. Napier ... ... *49} South Dunedin ... ... ”W Rangiora ... ... ... 53} Hydrant Practice—For two men to run fifty yards to plug, carrying hydrant, hose, and branch; fir hydrant, run out 60ft hose, and show water.
secs. South Dunedin ... ... 25 Dunedin (No. 2 team) ... 25} Dunedin (No. I team) ... 25} The Mastei ton team made the longest time of 42}sec. A 200 yards foot race for Firemen was won by Davenport, of Wanganui, with Hounslow, of Mastorten, second. There was -a tug-of-war tor a bride’s cake, and as the Captain of the New Plymouth team and Fireman Graham, of Lyttelton are about to be married, these two teams tugged for it. Lytteltou won, so Graham secured the cake.
The meeting is now concluded, and the prizes were presented to-night. The annual meeting of the United Fire Brigades’ Association has been held in connection with the present demonstration- The following officers were appointed to act during the ensuing twelve months : President, Captain Cummings (Wanganui) ; vice-presidents, Captain Davis (Timaru) and Superintendent Waterworth (Napier); secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Robertson (Dunedin). It was decided that the next conference and demonstration be held in Naples during the month of January,: 1886.
