It ia understood that Mr Pilbrow and Mr Maxwell, the owners of Clarence and Sunray, have sent letters to the stewards of the Auckland Club claiming the stakes for the Steeplechase. The matter was before the stewards yesterday, but their future action in the matter has not transpired. Mr Weston has already received his cheque for Linwood’a victory.
Not Forthcoming. A young man, named Franklyn, committed for trial recently at Wangarei for perjury, was not forthcoming to-day when the case came on in the Supreme Court. F reethought. A paper In the interests of Preethought, called Truth, was issued to-day, edited by Dr Hughes. The Hinemoa. The Hinemoa was beached at the North Shore to-day, and her bottom was cleaned. The officers are extremely reticent as to future movements.
Alleged SlanderWellington, Saturday,
Mr Andrew Young, a well-known coach proprietor, has served a writ on Mr N. Reid (of W. and G. Turnbull and Co.), claiming L 5,000 damages for slander and defamation of character of plaintiff and hia wife, by words spoken concerning them by the wife of the defendant.
Draughts. At four o’clock this arternoon, in the draughts tournament, A. Raeside (Invercargill) and John Little (Christchurch) were leading with 12 wins each, and H. Morris, of Invercargill, had 10J A draw counts half a win. T. Reid, of Sydney, has 9 wins to his credit. Each player plays four games with every ether player. Interesting to Outsiders. In consequence of the establishment of an Omnibus Company, the cab proprietors have reduced fares to and from the Spit to sixpence
The New Steamer. The refrigerating chambers on board the Arawa have been discovered to be too small to hold the intended shipment. 2,000 carcases will bo left behind from here. The steamer was thrown open to the public yesterday, and fares by the launch were fixed at 2s Ci, the proceeds to bo given to the Dreadnought Seamen’s Hospital. About 600 visited the vessel.

The Shaw, Saville and Albion Company are advised that the steamer Doric left Plymouth on the Bth instant for Auckland, carrying 308 passengers.

'J’imauu, To-day,
G. J. Palmer, licensee of the Lin wood Hotel, was to-day fined 15 for keeping his house open after hours.
Presentation
Blenheim, To day.
Sergeant White, in charge of the police at Blenheim, was to-day presented with an illuminated address and a purse of sovs, sent on by citizens of Auckland where White was formerly s* aliened. The Mayor of Blenheim made the presentation in the Courthouse.
