Fatal Fire.
At the fire which occurred at Narribari, north of this colony, three persons lost their lives. The damage to property by fire is estimated at LB,ooo. [Received December 22,12.31 a.m.]

SmallpoxA patient at the quarantine station, named Casey, has died of smallpox. Beach v. Cliffo; d.
No fresh match has yet been arranged between Beach and Clifford in place of the one which was fixed for 29th February next, but which fell through owing to Beach forfeiting by mistake.
Shipping. Hobaet, To-day. Arrived, on Saturday—Shaw-Savill’s Albion Co.’s steamship Arawa, en toute for New Zealand.
German Annexation. Melbourne, To-day. Mr Murray-Smith, the Agent General in London, telegraphs to the Government that he has seen Sir Robert Herbert, permanent Secretary to the Colonial Office, and that that official doubts the reported German annexation of the northern portion of New Guinea and the islands New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover and Admiralty Group. The Agent-General adds that the German Embassy in London denies the truth of the information received to that effect.
