BURGLARY.

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr Thomas Bullock, Henry Dudley, a tinsmith well known in Ashburton, was charged with having broken into the shop of Messrs Orr and Go. and stolen therefrom 2 pairs blankets, 6 pairs men’s socks, 1 pair trousers and vests, 1 suit clothes, 8 pair worsted socks, 1 pair hoys’ bo ts, 24 yards calico, 4

Omnean shirts, 1 box paper collars and 6i 9d in money, the total value of tr.e property being LIO Is The accused was undef-uided, and bora several scars about hia head and face, testifying to the severity of the struggle to which the arresting constable deposed. Constable Latimer said that about quarter past three this morning, while on duty in East street, be heard a noise in Messrs Orr and Co.’s shop. Ho found the door unlocked and opened it. He discovered the accused behind the door, and the latter on being asked what he was doing there, replied that he found the entrance open. Witness then proceeded to arrest the accused, who resisted, and a violent struggle took place before witness succeeded in securing and handcuffing his prisoner. The accused was in the act of rolling up the blankets when witness entered the shop. The other stolen articles had been placed in a bag, which was lying behind the door. It was not quite daylight at the time of the arrest. The accused had two skeleton keys in his pocket, and a third was found in the opened door of the shop. Sergeant Felton said that he did not propose to submit any further evidence at that stage, and asked the Bench for a remand until Monday next. The remand was granted. The accused was then charged with having on or about the Ist November, stolen 6 pairs trousers and 1 undershirt, valued at L2 2s 6d, from Mr R. Alcorn. 1 Sergeant Felton said that Mr Alcorn had 1 reported the loss of the articles specified in the charge, and on searching the ac- ' cused’s residence this morning they wore found. The police asked for a remand in ’ this case also, which was granted.
