ASHBURTON BOROUGH SCHOOL
Tho annual distribution of prizes to the pupils of the Borough School took place yesterday afternoon. In the absence of tho Chairman of the School Committee, Mr G. H. St Hill, tho duty of distributing the various gifts fell to Mr Joseph Ward, who explained that the awards ware made according to the examination by Mr W. L. Edge, the Inspector. The following is the prize list: Standard Yl—lst prize, Benjamin Williamson ; 2nd, Maud Barratt; 3rd, W. Mitchell.
Standard Y —lst, Harry Mills ; 2nd, Mary Williamson; 3rd, Ada Gates. Standard IY—lst, Dick Lancaster; 2.»1, Emily Hyde; 3rd, William Kidd. Standard lll—lst, Joseph Ward; 2nd, Minnie Sennet; 3rd, John Porter. Standard ll—lst, Albert Craighead ; 2nd, Alice Sergeant. Standard I—lst, Robina Miller; 2nd, Thomas Williamson, John Empaon, Elizabeth Bean, eqnal; 3rd, William Scott. Special Prizes. For best athlete Annual (Mr St Hill’s) Aleo Jamieson. For best pair of knitted stockings— Writing desk (Mrs J. Orr’s)jMay Williamson. • - For best specimen of darning—Writing desk (Mrs J. Orr’a), Alice Broomfield. For best essay on kindness to lower animals (headmaster’s) —Isabella Wilkie, Standard V.
For excellence in writing home work (headmaster’s)— Maud Bean, Standard IL For excellence in written home work (headmaster’s) —Leonard Gundry, Standard 11.
For good conduct (headmaster’s) —Jas. Mcßae, Standard I, For best prepared lessons (headmistress's) —Edith Poole, Standard IY. For good conduct (headmistress’s) — Kate Pearson, Standard IV. For good conduct (headmistress’s)— Frank Hancox, Standard IY.For greatest perseverance during the year (Mias Bean’s) Kate Harrold, Standard 11.
For good conduct, peraereranoe and punctuality (Miss Empson’s) Charles VVoraley, Standard I. Several prizes were also distributed among the pupils of the infant school. The midwinter holidays, which commenced yesterday, will last till July 2lst, when the school will re-asaemble.
