The Customs authorities have seized a quantity of the numbers of a publication called the “ Freethinker,” on the ground of being blasphemous, and containing profane pictures. Mrs Marshall, the wife of Fred Marshall, the well-known comedian, died on Thursday last of typhoid fever. Her death is a calamity te her husband, who will never be fit to work again, Hanlan gave an exhibition of rowing on Albert Park Lake on Saturday. An im. raense number of people witnessed it, and the affair was such a pecuniary success chat it will be repeated on next Saturday. A defect has been discovered in the Tramway Bill which may delay its construction. No provisions were inserted in the Bill providing for securing the rights of debenture-holders. An amending Bill will probably be introduced. A mao. named Barker has died at Williamstown Sanatorium. r )he case is presumably small-pox, but great disagreement exists among the doctors as to the exact nature of the disease. All the effects of the deceased have been burnt. The great Southern Cup Meeting of the Victoria Coursing Club concluded on Saturday, H. Gow’s Goorook winning the Cup, defeating Monsoon, the winner of the New South Wales Waterloo Cup. Scott’s Lady Dundas won the Oval Stakes, and J. McCulloch's Oarangamite the Rupert Stakes.

Since the opening of the temporary Labor Exchange on Tuesday last, 544 persons have registered their names as desirous of obtaining employment; 103 found work in three days. The steamer Oollary, which ran ashore three years ago between Newcastle and Sydney, has been successfully floated, 'The Minister of Education has promised to co-operate with Bishop Barry and allow him to take advantage of such facilities as the Public Instruction Act allows for imparting religious instruction in public schools, but declined to submit any scheme himself. Probably the Bishop will consult the clergy of the various denominations with a view to united action. The case of Warren v Webber, in which plaintiff is the doctor and defendant the captain of the steamer Zealandia, is a claim for damages for ill-treatment on the voyage. The jury wore unable to agree, and were discharged. Brisbane, Juno 10.
The Victorian gunboats, Victoria and Albert, and the torpedo boat Childers have arrived here from England. John McLean and Francis Rowan, seamen belonging to the labor schooner Forest King, have been sentenced to three years’ penal servitude, first year in irons, f,r kidnapping nine islanders in January last.
The Gympie mines continue to give fabulous yields. The latest crushing of of the Willmott Extended gave 2,183 ozs from 250 tons of stone.
Sir Thomas Mclllraith is expected back from England about the middle of July. Mr J. F. Garrick, the new Agent-Gene-ral, has so far recovered from the effects of his accident that he hopes to be able to leave next week. Hobart, June 10. The Doric arrived on Saturday after a passage of thirty-nine days’ steaming. She came up the river flying the yellow flag. The Master Warden and Health Officer went off and found several cases of measles, also several oases of chicken pox One man died of smallpox shortly afte * leaving Plymouth. The Hobart passen- r ~e - a were quarantined at Linclesfarn Island. So far no sign of eruptive disease has appeared amongst them. The question whether railway rolling stock shall be made in the colony is being generally discussed. A meeting has been held passing resolutions in favor of such a course. _______________
