THE EAST COAST ELECTION.
The polling for the East Coast election took place yesterday with the following result;— Locke ... ... ••• 439 Gannon ... 284 Rees ... ••• ••• 269
Returns from Tologoa Bay and other places are to come, but cannot affect the result. A large crowd was in the street at Gisborne last evening. Mr Locke thanked them from the balcony of the Masonic Hotel, and caUed for three cheers for the other candidates.
A number of voters, with the Returning Officer, left Napier for Tongoio booth yesterday morning, but owing to the Tongoio Lake having broken out across the beach, they were unable to get there; consequently Tongoio booth never opened. It is questioned whether that fact would not upset the election, although it is certain the result would have been to largely increase Locke’s majority.
[by telegraph.] Gisborne, To-day. No further election returns have yet been received, Mr Downes, Deputy- . Returning Officer, started out on Sunday, but the rivers are very much swollen and the horse returned with the saddle but without the rider. It is feared Mr Downes is lost. In consequence of the Supreme Court a constable cannot be spared to go in search.
