The Rebels Defeated. General Gordon in Safety. [reoxer’s TELEGRAMS —COPYRIGHT.] [Received June 3, 1.30 p.m.] Cairo, June 2. Despatches to hand from the Governor of Dongola state that that province will be pacified, and that an engagement has been fought between the garrison of Berber and the rebels, in which the latter were defeated with heavy loss. Information has been received from Khartoum that General Gordon continues to hold out against the besiegers, and has been successful in various engagements. Telegrams from Souakim report that a body of rebels approached the town, and a fusilade lasting two hours was kept up against them by the garrison, after which the rebels retired.
