A motion to lessen the depth of water on the sill of the proposed Calliope 'dock has been negatived by the Harbor Board. A Narrow Escape. An incipient fire was discovered this morning in Neal’s grocery warehouse, i t was extinguished before serious damage was done. Co-operative Enterprise. _ There is an agitation in the Waikato to induce the recently-formed Co-operative Association to establish butchers’ shops in Auckland. Sudden Death. Gisborne, To-day. A Maori who was attending a tangi a few days ago was found dead on his way home, with his boy crying over the corpse. The natives made a coffin and buried him where found. A Fortunate Speculator. Suddons, a billiard marker at the Gisborne Hotel, won L 750 in Ada Mantua’s consultation. The Wellington Fire. Wellington, To-day. An enquiry will bo held to-morrow into the recent fire at St. John's Church. The Victory. The steamer Victory sailed for Port Chalmers direct at two this morning. Not Guilty. Wanganui, To-day. The only criminal case at the District* Court, before Judge Rawson, was a charge against Horatio Walker, a native, for obtaining goods in Rochefort’s name. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. A New Council. Blenheim, To-day. At a meeting of working men it was decided to form a trades and labor Council on the lines of the Otago and Auckland Associations. Sir Julius Vogel, Christchurch, To-day. The Wellington telegram re Mr Pilliet resigning his seat for Stanmore if Sir Julius Vogel will come forward is understood to be correct, and communication has been opened up with Sir J.
